Using a large Fresnel Lens to concentrate sunlight allows for some amazing results when focused on a regular river rock. The collection build temperatures can rapidly exceed 3000 ˚F or 1649˚C with the right lens. When cooled the obsidian resembles a shiny black lava like mass. Caution should always be taken when using powerful solar tools. Always work in an open area safely away from kids, pets, structures, and dry brush. Never attempt concentrated solar experiments on a wind day and never leave a Fresnel Lens unattended. Safely store the lens in a light proof container. Eye protection and proper safety gear is also required.
